Googling Is for Old People. That’s a Problem for Google.
“This shift is due largely to users’ bypassing Google to start their search for goods on Amazon. It’s handing Amazon billions in advertiser dollars. Meanwhile, TikTok has less than 4% of U.S. digital ad revenue, but significant potential to expand its share of the pie. A recent TikTok pitch to advertisers reported on by The Wall Street Journal said that 23% of its users searched for something within 30 seconds of opening the app, and its global search volume was three billion a day.”
Surge of online spending means more Americans stay home on Black Friday
“Sales on Friday rose by 3.4 per cent year on year from Black Friday 2023, according to data released on Saturday by Mastercard SpendingPulse. That masked starkly different trends in ecommerce and in brick and mortar locations. While online retail sales jumped by 14.6 per cent year on year, in-store sales rose by only 0.7 per cent, Mastercard said… Transactions monitored by Adobe Analytics showed online spending rose 10.2 per cent on year to a record $10.8bn for Black Friday. The sum was more than twice what consumers spent online during Black Friday five years ago, Adobe said.”
